Synopsis of The Amityville Haunting
George and Kathy Lutz buy a previously-owned home at a fantastic price. However, the home has a dark history.
The owners beforehand--a family of six--were brutally murdered by Ronald DeFeo, a member of the family, before he shot himself.
Despite the tragic backstory, the Lutzes still buy the house. As soon as they move in, though, they begin to experience unexplained phenomenon, such as the magnetic letters on the fridge rearranging themselves, random cold spots, a sudden change in temper of George, and Chelsea--the youngest daughter of the family--claims to have a new friend named Jodie.
One night, the couple decides to go out, so they hire a babysitter. The babysitter, Lisa, tells Billy, Michael, and Chelsea about what happened to the house's previous tenants. Chelsea tells Lisa that "Jodie says to stop that right now!" However, Lisa doesn't listen, and ends up getting locked in the closet. Jodie appears before Lisa, and takes ahold of Lisa's hand and pokes Lisa's fingers through the bullet hole in Jodie's forehead.
When Kathy and George return, the babysitter gets taken away in a hospital. Before Lisa is taken away, Lisa tells Kathy that Lisa had seen Jodie. Concerned, Kathy goes to see Father Callaway, where she asks him to bless their house in an attempt to berid of the paranormal activity. Father Callaway obliges. As he begins to bless the home, however, and flees shortly after he is swarmed by flies and a deep, menacing voice tells him to get out.
Meanwhile, George is furious, and the next day, forces Billy to hold the firewood that George is chopping right up until the axe collides with the wood. When Billy lets go too early, George snaps at him and forces Billy to continue.
George's behavior continues to grow increasingly worse and worse, and Kathy worries for her and her children's well-being. Kathy decides to do research on the home, while George himself explores a hidden room in the basement. Kathy discovers that the house once belonged to a cult preacher who tortured Native Americans, and that George's sudden change in attitude is due to a spiritual possession.
Following the advice from Father Callaway to leave the house and never return, Kathy gathers up her children and they all begin to escape the home. However, every door and window around them locks, preventing any means of escape. George follows them, gun in hand, as Kathy and the kids flee to the roof. It pours down rain, and several times Kathy nearly slips. They slide down to the ground, where Kathy almost kills George but instead briefly knocks him out by hitting him in the face with the barrel of the gun. Billy urges Kathy to kill George, but Kathy insists that they get George over to the nearby boat and get away from the house.
When they finally drag George over to the boathouse, they throw the unconscious body in and begin to sail across the lake and away from the house. As the house grows smaller in the distance, the sun rises and George wakes up, back to normal. The same day, the Lutzes leave their home, not bothering to take any of their belongings with them.
